The ALAC 2023 National Judge’s Commentary

First let me thank the ALAC members for allowing me the honor of judging the 2023 NATIONAL SPECIALTY. It was a dream come true.

I was extremely pleased with the overall quality of the entire entry. Nothing more breathtaking than a ring full of beautifully presented Lhasas. My breed winner was a beautifully presented example of breed type and soundness.

WD was also my Best Puppy. A handsome young dog that truly will be one to watch in the future. WB, BW, was a true beauty. Great to find out she was related to my BOS. She was also my BBY. My SELECTS were both easy choices. SD, a top winner, in top condition. SB, A lovely girl, that I later found out was last years
National Best Puppy. Both are lovely examples of the breed, as were my Award of Merits.

I know it’s a cliche but I just didn’t have enough ribbons. In closing, I would like to say the approach I use when judging is “Would I use this dog in a breeding program?” While beautiful coat is important, it’s what is underneath that counts.

In the end, when you think about it, more puppies go as pets than are kept for show or breeding. So, we must make sure that structure, soundness and good temperaments are a priority in the breeding’s we do. Healthy sound pets are what keep this breed alive. Thank you for bringing your lovely Lhasas to show to me. It’s a memory I will cherish forever.
